Man’s Hanbok

I was inspired by the research and work of Seong Myeong Su Daegam and wanted to have some Korean clothes to match her. Since my knowledge of Korean clothing is fairly basic and my grasp of the language is rudimentary at best, I relied on her to help me with a lot of the research.

My goal was to create an outfit suitable for a man of the yangban (gentry or scholarly official) class to wear in an everyday, non-official setting. The pieces of this are:

  • Jeoksam (적삼) – undershirt
  • Baji (바지) – pants
  • Beoseon (버선) – socks
  • Haengjeon (행전) – gaiters
  • Jikryeong/jingnyeong (직령) – coat with straight collar
  • Gatkkeun (갓끈) – beaded hat string
  • Gwangdahoe (광다회) – flat braided belt or
  • Sejodae (세조대) – cord belt with tassels
  • Manggeon (망건) – headband
  • Gat (갓) – hat
