I have posted several boxes in the past, but I don’t think I have done a step by step how-to for making strap hinges. This is a relatively simple design that is quick to make and doesn’t require any advanced skills.
Materials:
- 22ga mild steel
- A wire coat hanger
Tools:
- Metal shear (or other means of cutting metal)
- Drill press (not necessary but very handy – a hand held power drill or metal punch will do)
- Vise
- Awl
- Cold chisel (3/8″ is the smallest I could find, but I ground one down to 1/4″)
- Center punch
- Lineman’s pliers
- Needlenose or round nose pliers
- Ball peen hammer
- Metal file
- Needle files
