Jeogori Measurements

      No Comments on Jeogori Measurements

When looking to recreate hanbok from extant pieces, one of the first things I like to do is find the extant pieces and look at the measurements. This helps me compare the sizes of the garments to my own body’s size so I know how it would fit and what adjustments I would need to make.

Jeogori are typically listed with some standard measurements, but they’re not always well-known outside of Korea! This post will hopefully help demystify what some of those measurements mean!

1 – 화장 (hwajang)- measurement from back point of neck to shoulder point to a little past the wrist

2 – 고대 (godae)- measurement around base of neck

3 – 깃 너비 (git neobi)- collar width

4 – 수구 / 부리 (sugu/buri)- cuff opening width

5 – 진동 (jindong) – sleeve width/shoulder to armpit

6 – 품 (poom)- chest measurement/measurement across body of jeogori

7 – 앞 길이 (ap gili)- front length

8 – 배래 (baerae)- bottom of sleeve length

9 – 겉섶 (geotseop)- front crossover panel

10 – 옆 트임 (yeop teuim)- side slit

11 – 도련 (doryeon)- hem

12 – 뒷 길이 (dwit gili)- back length

Jeogori measurements are typically listed as flat measurements and are listed in centimeters. Sometimes the cuff opening will be listed as 수구 or 부리, so I listed both. The crossover panels are called 섶, so that may also just be listed as that. 위 means top and 아래 means under/bottom, so if you see these, it’s referring to the top and bottom crossover panels. 앞 is front and 뒷 is back and sometimes the front and back lengths of the jeogori will be different and labeled as such.

Hanbok Sarang has a great link on how to measure yourself for custom modern hanbok, but this may be helpful to visualize how to measure for the 화장 – neck to wrist measurement!

Next, I’ll be labeling the pieces that make the jeogori. Hopefully this helps as you do research on extant pieces!
