16th C Joseon Norigae – Knotted Ornament

Finished Norigae

Inspired by Baroness Sunneva’s call for a Labyrinth A&S Challenge at Red Tower 2019, I decided that I would make a norigae, or knotted ornament. It’s been a project that I’ve wanted to work on for a while, so it was a perfect opportunity to make it fit the theme but also practice my techniques.

The cord is made of rayon as a silk substitute and woven on my cord loom, which consists of a vase with a wooden plate on top, and weighted bobbins. The wooden plate has notches filed into it to give the string places to rest. Master Lorenzo made a wooden stand for my loom to make it easier to transport and wind up the cord as I weave it.

I won the A&S Challenge at Red Tower and became South Down’s A&S Champion. I tweaked the documentation and reentered it at Magna Faire 2019 and scored a 17.
