Garb Inventory I, or Please Stay Back 10 Feet

This is really for my own use but maybe you guys will get something out of it, so… enjoy the trainwreck!

Gowns:

  • Dark navy blue gown – semi-fitted, loose long sleeves, very full skirt (more than a circle)
    • Blended mystery fabric; has a fairly soft finish
    • T-tunic construction + many gores + lots of haphazardly placed seams for fitting (It’s seen some shit… it’s been modified A LOT)
    • Unfinished seams, though not fraying terribly
    • Mostly unhemmed, partially selvage edge
    • No fastening, wiggle-in style
  • Light blue gown – very fitted, short sleeved, full skirt
    • thick cotton broadcloth
    • t-tunic construction + gores + hem guard + lots of extra fitting seams
    • Unfinished seams disintegrating – badly
    • Hem guard is partially a different fabric due to running out of original fabric
    • No fastening – (at one point there was lacing on this but I sewed it closed at the event because it stretched and became too loose; and that’s how it’s stayed)
  • Grass green gown – very fitted, set-in long sleeves, full skirt
    • Cotton broadcloth that I dyed myself (!)
    • Reasonably period construction… but no waist seam
    • Unfinished seams starting to disintegrate
    • IT IS HEMMED (!)
    • It has front lacing! …that needs to be redone because I used washers that don’t unlace well so I wiggle into it anyway
  • Bright red gown – semi-fitted, set-in tight long sleeves, medium-full skirt
    • Faux linen blend
    • Set in sleeves but no waist seam; intended to be side lacing but it has a panel behind it (I believe this was made from a modern pattern)
    • Finished seams
    • Hemmed
    • No fastening because I sewed it shut…
    • I didn’t make this one – it was a gift! (Thanks, Bronwyn!)
  • Dark red gown – very fitted, short set-in sleeves, very narrow skirt
    • Wool blend (?) remnant from thrift store
    • Unfinished seams
    • Hemmed
    • Front lacing that’s also sewn shut because I used those stupid washers again, needs to be redone
  • Gold brocade gown – very fitted, short set-in sleeves, ENORMOUS SKIRT. IT IS HUGE (like a circle and a half!) AND SUPER LONG AND HEAVY. $$$$ BLING $$$$
    • Synthetic brocade
    • Reasonably period construction with a waist seam but the skirt takes advantage of 60″ fabric big time so that’s not period at all.
    • Partially finished seams
    • “Hemmed” (I cheated with the iron-on stuff)
    • Front lacing that actually works and is not sewn together, however, I will redo this as it’s the damn washers again. Please don’t ever use washers instead of lacing rings. They shred the lacing. I have to use a heavy duty shoelace.

Underclothes:

I do not wear mundane supportive garments under my garb, which I’m very happy about (Who wants to deal with bra strap lines?)  but it’s absolutely shameful what garbage this stuff is… HIGH PRIORITY!

  • Partially finished, long-sleeved supportive chemise that “works” but is totally unfinished, cotton sheet material, please don’t look at this ever
  • Even less finished sleeveless “chemise”
  • Walmart cotton woven nightgown that I added seams to to make supportive
  • I currently wear mundane woven shorts or yoga pants under my gowns depending on the weather

Accessories:

  • Red wool hood with long liripipe
    • Lightweight wool makes for an excellent all-weather hat
    • Looks good but construction is iffy; back of the neck bit I think needs more research
  • White tied cap with flaps/brim “milkmaid” style (x2)
    • Looks pretty good but based on outdated analysis of how those types of caps were constructed
  • Long thigh-high socks, black, red, and blue (x6)
    • Completely mundane but absolutely awesome for events
    • Eventually replace with woven hose
  • Split/demi-cent/half girdle black leather belt with reproduction (English, late 15th century) brass findings
    • My pride and joy
    • Need to get a brass chain to replace mystery metal chain
  • Navy blue purse with red cord and tassels
    • Mystery fabric, handsewn with flap and fabric button
    • I will replace this eventually with a leather purse but it’s at the end of the list because this is very functional and looks pretty good
  • Thin jeweled metal belt with long hanging center
    • Fun and blingy for revels
    • Totally cheap and mundane
  • Black leather pointed-toe booties
    • Comfortable enough to walk around gulf wars for a week
    • Mundane but definitely pass 10 foot rule and are usually covered except the toes by my gowns
    • Low-priority to replace unless they wear out
  • Houppelande coat
    • Dark red mystery fabric
    • Faux fur trim and silk sleeve lining
    • Unfinished and despondent about the fit
    • Might finish it just to have something warm to wear but it is unacceptable
  • Brass AOA circlet
    • Fits but is uncomfortable to wear with pinned-up braids, which is how I always wear my hair…
    • If I’m going to wear something out of period I want it to be prettier
  • Falcon’s Faith Brooch
    • Need to find permanent solution to be able to pin this to my hood – so period and chic!
  • “Midwife” style apron
    • Excellent for keeping garb clean when helping in the kitchen
    • It’s made of bedsheets but definitely passes given the circumstances
  • Green wool bycocket hat with feathers
    • Apparently women need to wear veils with their bycocket hats; it’s slightly pre-period for me but it’s so damn practical and sharp looking!

Immediate Wishlist

  • Veils: None finished; want to have that as an option for my bycocket hat
  • Jewelry: None to speak of that’s period
  • Cosmetics: Mundane
  • Partlet: I need to make this ASAP; need to find suitable transparent material and figure out construction. This is seen in almost all contemporary depictions of the garb I wear and I’m just NOT WEARING IT! Ugh.

Woah! I’m really digging the template/theme of this site.
It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s very hard to get
that “perfect balance” between user friendliness and visual appearance.
I must say that you’ve done a very good job with this. Additionally, the blog
loads very quick for me on Chrome. Outstanding Blog!
